I want to be a Physiotherapy Assistant not merely because of the passion I have for the profession but genuinely I have that strong eagerness to assist the individual who are functionally limited in one way or the other with the core aim of promoting total or partial independence.
In this wise, I personally have been a victim of CVA (Cerebrovascular Accident) which rendered me functionally limited but with the help of physiotherapy interventions, my condition improved massively. Initially, I had no idea about physiotherapy and what it entails but through my experience as a CVA patient, I got to realize how significant physiotherapy intervention is in the life of an individual right from Pediatrics to Geriatrics. The Physiotherapist in charge at that moment of my condition through her immense care and affection for me, doing all her best to see me recover instilled in me that passion for the profession and also to study further for it in other to render services to people that might face similar challenges as mine. I possess a lot of qualities as far as physiotherapy practice is concerned and among them are ;
Empathy and Compassion, naturally, I am someone who easily understands how a person feels in a situation whether good or bad this is in the sense that I am able to be in the exact shoes of an individual and with that comprehend how they feel. With regards to this, been a past CVA victim, I can vividly point out the kind of frustrations, sufferings, pain and depression that a certain condition, injury or disability can put one through.
Also, Good communication skills, l do my best in explaining things in a concise manner to both my clients and colleagues. For instance, explaining every procedure to clients when applying infrared. Making it known to them the physiological effects of it that is ensuring proper blood circulation, pain reduction and muscle relaxation.
Moreover, Organizational skills, I am good at putting things in order as in arranging clients folders in order of their days and times for treatment sessions. Documenting each client’s details. Also I am very responsible in decision making when it comes to knowing the proper treatment plan programs that will be helpful for each client. I am very time conscious when it comes to taking my clients through exercise programs. For example making sure every client complete each sets and repetitions at the time allocated for them in each exercises.
Furthermore, Team building, been a team player is one of my best qualities. I know how to interact with team members and clients as well. Again working hand in hand with team members.
Another point I would like to talk about is Positive attitude, building a good rapport with clients and colleagues and also giving them the needed respect. For instance let assume that a patient comes to my unit with much pain, the kind or choice of words used might either worsen the condition or vise versa so in cases like this, I make sure I act patiently and respect the client decision no matter the race, religion or financial status and give them the needed treatment accordingly.
