As a physiotherapist, I am a highly motivated professional person who strives to provide individualized care that incorporates the patients’ physical, mental and psychosocial status. Being a compassionate person, I strive to continually improve and advance my clinical skills and knowledge by incorporating evidence based practices into every aspect of physiotherapy care. values such as care and compassion to the patients, getting the basic right and every person counts approach in delivering good quality healthcare services for patients will positively impact patient care and is a means to achieving high standard of excellence.
Working in a private Hospital as a physiotherapist has endeared me to be able to work independently in a variety of clinical settings in a busy environment, enabling me gain in experience as a clinician. Presently, I am covering both the outpatient and inpatient departments seeing an average of 15 patients’ daily providing rehabilitation, respiratory, orthopedics, surgical, neurology and musculoskeletal interventions to a broad case of patients including children and elderly. Having also had a familiar experience prior to my current work place at a military hospital where I was exposed to community health services participating in a four week medical outreach programme as part of a Multidisciplinary team comprising occupational therapist, speech therapist, Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists and myself as the Physiotherapist in a rural community in northern part of Nigeria where we assessed patients both subjective and objectively, provided treatment either in form of drug prescriptions, exercises prescriptions, manual therapy techniques, patient counseling as a result of our clinical findings, and I enlightened them on Osteoarthritis which was prevalent in the community.
Also, my current role as a physiotherapist in the male surgical ward has a strong Multidisciplinary approach as many as the patients have very complex care following surgery. I work closely with the medical team comprising of , speech therapist, occupational therapist,Surgeons, Doctors and Nurses to ensure patient care is coordinated and all the care needs of patients are fulfilled. Through this experience, I ensure I have a thorough knowledge of the patients making me able to contribute to decision making regarding in -patient care and discharge planning at the twice weekly multidisciplinary meetings. I strongly believe that effective multidisciplinary working is vital in providing holistic care as no one profession can meet all the needs of a patient and their family alone.
As a clinician that work towards restoring patients to optimum function and mitigating disability, I have often had cases with patients whose functions are either limited or lost in one or more areas of the body as a result of trauma or other medical conditions. These patients most at times are anxious of their recovery period. With my clinical reasoning skills and assesment techniques I am able to form a diagnosis, design a plan of care that meets both patients and therapy goals and administer treatment programmes that is centred either on an individual or group patient to achieve a desirable outcome. Not forgetting to reassure these patients and provide support to them from time to time especially for the anxious ones. Being a strong advocate of reflective practice, I know it is one of the ways in which clinicians ensure that the right care is being given to the patient at a given time hence the reason reviews are done to these patients’ cases during the course of management using recognised oucome measures and implementing changes when necessary so as to integrate them duely back into the society like they desire.
However my skills go beyond clinical knowledge and technical ability. Both patients and carers have praised my communication skills. I am able to effectively explain procedures to patients and answer any questions they ha
