Muscle Energy Techniques Lumbar, Pelvis and Sacrum Introduction. Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) are a combination of mobilisation and contract-relax techniques combined are applied to treating musculoskeletal dysfunction. Used in manual and physical therapy. METs treat somatic dysfunction, especially decreased range of motion, muscular hypertonicisy and pain Muscle Energy Techniques METs are a direct and active technique as they engage a restrictive barrier and require patient’s participation for maximal effect. METs can significantly decrease pain and improve functionality in patients with disorders such as whiplash, neck pain, thoracic spine and rib pain, along with low back and pelvic pain. You will be able to incorporate METs into your clinical practice immediately Clinical Application of Muscle Energy Techniques to Lumbar Pelvis and Sacrum This course introduces the muscle energy system in evaluation and treatment of the lumbar spine, pelvis, and sacrum. Learn the history and framework of MET, palpation skills, anatomy, surface anatomy review, biomechanics of the lumbar, pelvis and sacral areas and treatment of these areas using muscle energy and soft tissue techniques. By the end of this course you will be able to confidently assess pelvic, sacral and lumbar dysfunctions. The course empathises a hands-on clinical approach as well as self-mobilisation and home exercise programs Learning Outcomes • Understand the history of MET and the physiological framework of it’s application • Apply palpation techniques to assist in the diagnosis of dysfunction in the region. • Assess and treat dysfunctions of the sacrum, name sacral torsions and side bent sacrums, according to MET principles. • Understand assess and treat dysfunction in the lumbar spine applying the positional diagnosis approach used in MET. • Assess and treat dysfunction found in the ilium and pubic regions of the pelvis according to MET principles. • Understand and integrate the use MET into clinical practice.
