Evidence-based Tai Chi for Health, Fall Prevention & Chronic Condition Rehab
Exercise Medicine Australia
Chronic conditions are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the world. Over 30 randomised control trials have demonstrated that Tai Chi significantly improves a wide range of clinical parameters of chronic conditions including functional abilities, overall mental and physical health, and quality of life for chronic condition patients. There is also compelling evidence that Tai Chi is effective in improving postural control and balance and preventing fall, the leading cause of injury-related deaths and injury-related hospitalizations in the elderly population. Based on compelling research evidence, informed by exercise science and guided by exercise prescription principles and safety guidelines, the Clinical Tai Chi for Rehabilitation Program, the Tai Chi for Health and Fall Prevention Program, the Tai Chi for Mental Health and Cognitive Improvement Program and the Tai Chi for Cardiopulmonary Health Program jointly developed by Exercise Medicine Australia and Exercise Medicine International, are designed to increase muscle strength and endurance; improve cardiopulmonary health and fitness; improve mobility, balance and postural stability; reduce deconditioning effect and prevent functional decline, disability and fall; reduce clinical symptoms; achieve physical and mental health recovery; regain functional abilities and independence; and improve the quality of life. The courses are/were accredited or supported by national and international professional governing bodies including Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA), AUSactive, Australian & New Zealand Falls Prevention Society and Australian Physiotherapy Association. Upon completion of a course, enrolees will receive 15 CEC/CPDs for professional development and certification to apply, teach or practice the programs in healthcare, community or residential settings. The professional development courses for physiotherapists and other allied health practitioners and exercise professionals focus on step-by-step teaching and practice of the movements of the programs and reseach evidence and exercise science underpinning the programs. The programs are easy to learn and practice and safe to apply. The courses are available in self-paced online learning; live training on Zoom and face-to-face training.
