Integrative Breathing Therapy - Assess and treat dysfunctional breathing - Module 2
Sydney 26-28 July 2019
Learn how to master the art and science of working with the breath with this 3 day course taught by Dr. Rosalba Courtney DO, PhD, a world leading researcher and clinician who has developed and validated clinical tools and protocols for the assessment and treatment of dysfunctional breathing.
The course teaches you how to assist patients with the broad range of conditions affected by disordered breathing, including anxiety, back, neck and pelvic pain, disproportionate and unexplained dyspnea, sleep disordered breathing, athletic performance, somatic and pain syndromes. In this course you will learn :
• Why breathing is fundamental to health and physical function.
• How to recognise the 1 in 10 people have dysfunctional breathing
• Many difficult to treat patients start to improve when their breathing issues are addressed
Integrative Breathing Therapy (IBT) professional training (Modules 1 ‘The Biomechanical Dimension’ and 2 ‘The Biochemical and Psychophysiological Dimensions’) is for practitioners who recognise the need to assess and optimise airway function and breathing in their patients and want to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to do this effectively.
You can do Module 2 without having done Module 1 - they are stand alone courses.
• Get a broad and deep understanding of the biomechanics, physiology and psychology of the breath
• Learn how to recognize, measure and treat biomechanical, biochemical and psychophysiological aspects of dysfunctional breathing using evidence based tools.
• Learn how to effectively choose from a range of evidenced based breathing therapies and combine them with your other clinical skills to enhance patient care.
Module 2 “The Biochemical and Psychophysiological Dimensions of Breathing Dysfunction and Breathing Therapy”
This module focuses on the assessment and treatment of the biochemical and psychophysiological dimensions of breathing.
Biochemical Dimension - You will learn to assess and treat the biochemical dimension of breathing. You will also learn how to treat breathing dysfunctions such as hyperventilation and hypoventilation disorders and apply some breathing therapies that either raise or lower oxygen and carbon dioxide levels for therapeutic purposes e.g capnometry assisted biofeedback, the Buteyko method, Intermittent Hypoxic Training and therapeutic hyperventilation techniques.
Psychophysiolgical Dimension - You will learn the key concepts of respiratory psychophysiology including the relationships between breathing, mental and emotional processes and the stress response. You will learn breathing techniques that improve the function and regulation of the autonomic nervous system, reduce hyperarousal and reset the reactivity of the stress response. You will also learn how to include appropriate breathing therapies as part of a multi-disciplinary approach to assist patients with anxiety, trauma, depression and stress related disorders.
20 hours CPD each Module.
