Physiotherapy Course Summary:
Preventing Chronicity: Mindfulness informed clinical practice for the prevention and treatment of chronic pain
An injury initiates a series of challenges. How challenge is viewed, approached and responded to, influences the ability of the body to heal, the way in which pain is either resolved or maintained by the nervous system and the ability to engage in life. When pain and injury are reacted to against a background of unhelpful beliefs, with a global stress response, poor emotional regulation, catastrophic thoughts and avoidance behaviours; the immune and hormonal systems and the brain function in ways that maintain pain and foster disability. How do we as health professionals identify unhelpful responding and facilitate self awareness, self regulation of the sympathetic nervous system and self guided recovery?
This course offers a multidisciplinary approach to help prevent and treat chronic pain.
It is important for participants to appreciate that this course is one small step on a journey where effective clinical practice requires a personal exploration of mindfulness. A few of the areas that we will address:
LEARN the key factors to identify and address to help prevent chronic pain.
ENGAGE in mindfulness-based breath, body scan and movement practices to increase body awareness, regulate the nervous system and facilitate 'normal' movement.
EXPLORE how to help people reframe their experience in positive ways through enquiry, feedback, science education, posture, breathing, movement and self guided goal setting.
CONTEMPLATE how your beliefs influence patient recovery.
