Physiotherapy Course Summary:
Integrative Breathing Therapy practitioner training is for practitioners who want to include a systematic and evidence based approach to breathing assessment and breathing retraining in their clinical work.
The training provided in this course is a synthesis of Dr. Courtney’s many years of academic research into dysfunctional breathing and her broad clinical practical experience in the area of breathing retraining and breathing therapy.
The 2 levels of this course expand on previous courses taught by Dr. Courtney. The aim of the current course is to gives participants a deep and thorough understanding of breathing and the multiple ways it interacts with the function of the mind and body as well as a structured evidence based protocol and practical techniques for assessing and treating dysfunctional breathing.
Practitioners will learn breathing retraining/breathing therapy protocols to assist clinical outcomes in the treatment of patients with muscular-skeletal conditions (including back and neck pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, cranio-mandibular pain and postural movement dysfunction, oromyofunctional disorders and TMD), cardio-respiratory conditions (including asthma, COPD and sleep disordered breathing) and stress related breathing disturbances.
Level 1 of the Integrative Breathing Therapy practitioner training provides the foundations for an integrative understanding of the anatomy, physiology and psychology of breathing and of the functions and dysfunctions of breathing. Participants then receive in-depth training in assessment, treatment and applications of the neuromuscular and biomechanical dimension of breathing functionality.
-Theory and practical applications of Dr. Courtney’s evidence based multi-dimensional model of dysfunctional breathing
-Understanding the Biomechanical Dimension of breathing
-Causes of Biomechanical Breathing Dysfunction
-Consequences of Biomechanical breathing dysfunctions on Structure and Multi-System Function
-Evaluating Breathing Pattern Dysfunction and Breathing Habits
-Correcting Breathing Pattern disorders and Dysfunctional Breathing
Level 1 also gives participants training in basic and advanced versions of the Manual Assessment of Respiratory Motion (MARM), this is a validated clinical and research palpation procedure that can be used to assess and quantifying several aspects of breathing pattern and its functionality.
20 hours CPD.
Future Level 2 course will focus on the biochemical and psychophyiological dimensions of breathing.
Breathing Therapies -covered in level 1 and 2 of this course, include
*Neuromuscular breathing rehabilitation
*Mind-body breathing techniques
*Capnometry assisted biofeedback,
*Intermittent hypoxic training,
*Resonance frequency breathing,
