I have been working as a full-time Philippines' Licensed Physical Therapist (PTRP) for almost 5 years in a secondary, privately owned hospital with a 100-bed capacity. One of my duties and responsibilities as a PT is to evaluate and treat patients with disabilities and dysfunctions, may it be Neurological such as Stroke, Spinal Cord Injuries, Parkinson's disease, and alike; pediatrics, where we cater to cerebral palsy patients or children who broke their bones, which mainly falls into musculoskeletal; musculoskeletal, which can be an array of illnesses usually related to Orthopedic cases such as Fractures, Muscle Strains, and pre- and post-ACL surgery repair. Next is cardiovascular, which includes patients who have undergone pre- and post-cardiac surgery (CABG, angioplasty, and the like). Lastly, pulmonary, which is very timely and relevant due to COVID-19, which shows long-term effects such as weakening of cardiovascular endurance amongst patients.
In addition to that, we are also tasked with relieving pain and alleviating symptoms that hinder clients from developing and restoring function to its maximum potential through PT modalities such as Electrotherapy (TENS, ES, FES, EMS), Therapeutic Ultrasound, Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy, Kinesio-tapping, dry, and electro-needling therapies. The most recent one, which can be considered one of the first to offer such a service, is the HAL, or Hybrid Assistive Limb, an exoskeleton designed to support and expand the physical capabilities of its users, particularly people with physical disabilities. and exercises in a professional, ethical, and safe manner.
Aside from these, we are also expected to develop and apply specific, attainable, reliable, and time-bound goals that fit the current level of fitness of the client and to collaborate with other healthcare providers so that we can give our patients a holistic treatment approach. We are also to maintain proper documentation using the SOAP method, record keeping of patient or client medical charts while maintaining confidentiality among each and every patient, and proper education regarding the condition not only to the patient but to their families as well. Considering our hospital is located in a province, we usually cater to 7-8 patients on a daily basis, both for outpatient and inpatient procedures.
