Smile Re: Still A Student But Hoping To Work In Oz As A Junior Physio In 2009? Pls Help!!!!

Dear all,

I know this may have been asked time and time again but i really need help. I am a second yr physio student and am currently re-evalutating my career. I have been passionate about physiotherapy and dare I say the valuable experience that NHS can give but due to the job situation which doesnt seem like it will be resolved by next yr this time wen i will be qualified I am looking at my options in OZ. I have always wanted to move out there but am petrified at the thought that the job situation for fresh new graduates will still be the same.

I'm hoping to stay here and try for an NHS rotational job but if not then want to try for OZ after 3-4 months as a back up plan. I know the procedures involved and that Iwould need to get my qualifications recognised but my question is. how likely is it that i will get a job out there specifically in perth being a fresh new graduate? I am hoping to move there with my spouse so visas are not a problem but being ableto find the job after spending the money and effort to get my qualifications recognised is it worth it? how much do they get paid there? how likely is it that i will get a job?

sorry bout the essay.

thanks guys!!

Most, if not all states, require a minimum of 12 months post qualification work experience, so you won't be able to go straight from uni.

Just to summarise the process to work in Aus you need to:

1) get your degree approved by the APA (you can do this as soon as you graduate)
2) Apply for the written exam....once you have applied you can work on either a temporary basis for 3 months in each job you do without actually having to sit any exams
3) if you want to work for more than 3 months in any 1 place you'll need to sit the written and the practical exams

each state in Aus has a different board with different requirements, so you'll need to check thier websites to clarify.

thank u so much for that info...

i will probably be workingtherefor more than three months so I'm going to have to perhaps try and get in contact with an agent? who can tell me if it is mostly the case that 12 months experience is needed. If so... i need to find a way round it somehow cos if i dont get a job here i dont want to waste time waiting around... perhaps doign a masters degree out there might help? any other ideas on the way out of the 1 months experience? Wonder what the fresh graduates in perth do? They are in the same position as I would be wouldnt they?

Re: Still A Student But Hoping To Work In Oz As A Junior Physio In 2009? Pls Help!!!!

Hi,

Dont bother with the agents, they will tell you the same thing- I looked into this for a presentation when I was a student, if you want more than 3 months work you need 12 months post-grad experience. Some states inlcuding NSW want 12 months experience even for thier temporary 3 month permits, so you can rule out NSW!

And a MSc won't help you either as that doesn't count, they want post qualification actual work experience. It can be voluntary though so if you struggle to get a paid job voluntary work will do.

Fresh Perth grads don't have this problem- because they trained in Australia they can work there straight away without needing any post grad experience.

Your only option is to check the APA site and look at each physio board's website, some of the states (3 or 4 I think) will take you without experience but only for 3 months in each job, and you'll need someone in Aus to supervise you full time (which is not easy) and say that you are preparing to take the exams. Also bear in mind that these temporary jobs are often in unpopular rural places....

I really wouldn't worry too much though, I was in major panic mode myself 6 months ago about getting a job when I finished but I got a permanent job in the Uk as soon as I graduated, and out of 19 in my class 16 have jobs (within 4 months of graduating), most permanent The situation is really not as terrible as you think

Hi there

wow thank you so much for that info. Much appreciated. You are totally right im in a total state of panic with the whole job situation. I would still like to move to oz but I will def keep my hopes up high about getting a job here its so good to hear that people are getting jobs out there. Mind you Im not a 1st class sudent probably 2:1 or even 2:2.

At the moment Im jsu finishing my final set of main exams end of 2nd yr and am totally petrified at the thought that if idont get something close to a 1st im not gonna get a job here but that really does help.

Thank you once again,

Any thoughts on your secret to getting the degree done well enough to get a good job here in the uk?

LOL, no not really! I did the MSc pre-reg course which was totally knackering, I think anyone that does that has a good chance of getting work cos its such a nightmare to complete!

Don't worry though, I have a friend that did the BSc course and got a 2:2 and she got a permanent job eventually!
