swimming scapular rehabilitation
Hello guys,
I am currently looking at the most suitable exercises to be considered for scapular muscles rehabilitation after an injury in the recovery phase of the swimming stroke. Can anyone help me with the biomechanics of the recovery phase of the swimming stroke and any ideas about the sport specific exercises? Thanking you. |

I would look to studies done by the physios at the Australian Institute of Sport. I think Popov did quite a bit of work down there. The availability of mobility in the thoracic cage would be of importance to allow a good deal of scapula movement. Restriction in that area will lead to impingement of both glenohumeral and cervical structures as well as possible elevation of the first and second rib joints.
One should also look at the training to ensure that backstrooke is also included in their training. This will assist to balance the spine. Unfortunately we have all seen swimmers standing on the blocks and they, like ski paddlers, have postures bordering on the frightening! ![]() |

Hi!
I have just read a chapter (Ch11) on an elite swimmer's rehab by Margaret Magarey in "Clinical Reasoning for Manual Therapists" Mark A. Jones and Darren A. Rivett Editors. Amazon Link below: www.amazon.com/exec/obido...s&n=507846 The reference list has swimming articles in it as well. The book itself is quite helpful with good case studies and ideas on management in it - I think jenny McConnell's patient is Mark Philippoussis!!! Margaret Magarey is a physiotherapist (DipTechPhysioGrad. DipAdvancedManipTherapy, PhD), senior lecturer at the School of Health Sciences, University of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia. You can find her details on this page... www.unisa.edu.au/misc/pho...e_list.asp Maybe she can help you? |
