Unhappy Hip joint pain

Hello,

I'm 18 years old male, active in running(1-2 times a week, 3-4 miles, comfortable pace), gym and most of all Taekwondo and I think that's where my problem started. About month and a half ago my left hip joint started to hurt when performing middle section and high kicks and moves that require turning in hip joint, slow moves are much more painy than those fast ones. No swelling or redness evident, leg tends to be a bit warmer than other one. Pain is not consistent and disappears quickly, comes back with kick or turn in hip joint. My master suggested drinking more tap water as I don't drink that much, about 1 litre a day, would 2 litres be more suitable? I do drink a lot of juices though. So, this is my story Any advice welcomed. Feel free to ask any additional info please.

Thank you
Kihap

Re: Hip joint pain

I understand now.

YouTube - Revolution of Kicking - Side Kick

You can see anantomy of a side kick in this video, mostly from 01:00 to 01:40
Pain comes when I extend my leg and also a silent click. I can feel the pain only in hip joint, nowhere else in my leg.

Another kick that is causing pain in left hip joint is the middle section front kick (between waist and chest). I can hear quite loud click in my left hip joint when performing this kick but, only if doing it slowly.

Ask for more info if you wish. Thank you
Kihap

Question Re: Hip joint pain

hi friend
according to the description and analysis of the video and pic,i feel there might have occured some injury to the labrum.it is the structure which enhances the stability of hip.mostly it might have injured in the posterior aspect of the joint.this is my hypothesis and hope other physios will also share their views regarding this

Re: Hip joint pain

Agree, this does sound like a labral injury. If you are seeing a physio there are a couple of test which they should be able to do to check this (p.621 Orthopedic Physical Assessment, Magee).

The only other thing that springs to mind is psoas weakness (muscle controlling hip movt) from a possible overstretching injury during a kick. This causes a similar clicking, would notice if laying on back and lifting leg up then lowering back down (with leg straight)(click tends to occur on lowering) (obviously not definitive test). Does tend to be more noticable with slow control movement. Again physio should be able to check this for you (can correct momentarily with maximal hip suck type exercise, which can confirm whether this is a problem) if it is then needs retraining.

Best bet is to see a good sports physio and get a more definitive diagnosis / steer as to what needs to be done / how you can improve things.

Having done some kickboxing and karate myself don't be tempted just to ingnore the problem and just do quick kicks (because they are not so problematic), if you can't preform slow controlled kicks then chances are you are aggrevating the problem further with quicker kicks (as they are generally less controlled and snapped in and out). I carried on training with a hip problem for a couple of months (despite being a physio...i buried my head in the sand and ingnored it), then needed to take out more time than I should have to sort my resulting back problem out!

Good luck
