MCConnell taping

Hi Angela,
It depends upon which correction of malalignment you want to address. There are various McConnell techniques for lateral glide, inferior tilt, lateral tilt, external rotation, unloading pat pad... The most common correction in my experience has been for correction of lateral glide (to compensate for lack of VMO contraction). For this correction, you place a piece of tape on the lateral patellar border and firmly pull it just past the medial femoral condyle. At the same time, the soft tissue medially is lifted toward the patella to create puckering of the skin medially. Have the patient perform an activity (such as single leg squat), which would normally reproduce symptoms and reassess. The tape will be immediately effective in reproducing symptoms if it will be beneficial to the patient. In the words of Jenny, "The worst component is always corrected first and the effect of each piece of tape on the patient's symptoms should be evaluated by reassessing the painful activity. It may be necessary to correct more than one component." Hope that helps. Sorry, no pic.

just as the PT above said. I would ensure the tape covers the superior and inferior borders of the patella.
