Thigh pain / Quadriceps : How to treat?
Hi there.
I am new to this forum so many apologies if I post this is the wrong place. I have a physiotherapy question regarding an injury of my own if anyone could please offer some advice? I've recently starting running regularly, increasing both my speed and distance. On Monday I felt a bit of a pain in my right thigh but I was able to run a 6 mile course as comfortable as normal. On Tuesday the pain was still there but I managed to run 5 miles without any discomfort. Today, Wednesday, the pain is worse. When I stand from having been seated for any length of time, I am unable to put my whole weight onto my right leg with a pain in the centre of my thigh, running from top to bottom. After about ten seconds of limping / walking, I am then able to walk as normal. I would like to know the best way to treat this please. Should I apply an ice pack or a hot water bottle (or alternate the both as suggested by a work colleague)? I am scheduled to run 12 miles in around 24 hours but obviously full rehabilitation is of paramount importance to me. Your comments appreciated in advance. Steven. |

Re: Thigh pain / Quadriceps : How to treat?
hey Steven,
Have you been a runner before you started this activity or engaged in any other sporting activity? If not, and youy just suddenly started running on your own whim, then maybe you are going about it all wrong. Most importantly are you increasing your pace and time by the guidance of a professional trainer? Its important that you know when its time to increase the pace on your running and how, just by hicking up the speed when yoru muscles are not yet ready for it, you will definately cause a great deal of damage to your body and mostly to your muscles and soft tissues... U need to stop and properly assess your running technique as well as your running pace... |

Re: Thigh pain / Quadriceps : How to treat?
Hey there, and thanks for the reply.
I've done a lot of sport previously, mainly football. The training for this included a fair bit of running but it is only recently that I have started running more regularly. My training schedule has been devised by running professionals and I am following it to the letter so hopefully they aren't pushing me too hard. I will certainly review the training plan if it appears that it is too difficult for me. In the meantime do you have any suggestions regarding the treatment I should give my thigh? Thanks again, Steven. |

Many thanks.
I'll get the frozen peas now! I was just a bit thrown by my colleague's suggestion of using a hot water bottle. Any ideas why he might have said that? S> |

Hi
early stage of immflamation is contraindicated, and cold is ussually brings better result, but if u feel hot is better use hot, listen to your body, all the best Yarok |

Re: Thigh pain / Quadriceps : How to treat?
i agree with Yarok,
It is best to use cold therapy in the begining of your treatment. Maybe ur friend was not aware at what stage your pain was... Lord only knows why he might have suggested for you to use heat and best you ask him directly and let us know!!! Do do the cold therapy and stretching and let us know how you feel. Good luck. |
