Hip clicking whenever I walk

Hi everyone, this is my first post and I am not too sure if I am putting this in the right place.

I have had a problem with the left side of my hip for around three months now. Whenever I take a step, my hip clicks. I dont get a pain all the time as such but at the end of a day when I must of had thousands of clicks there is a dull ache/pain in my side which gets really annoying. My job doesnt help as most of the time I am sat at my desk but I do move around alot. I cannot fully describe it as a click (not like a finger clicking or the likes) but more like a thud/hard jolt that vibrates through my hip with every step, for the purpose of this thread I will relate to it as a 'click'.

This started when I was out walking with my Girlfriend three months ago when all of a sudden my hip snapped/clicked so loud that my girlfriend could hear it (standing on my right side). ever since then, every step I take clicks my hip.
I have never really had problems like this before. I have always been pretty rough as a kid and constantly crashed my bike, played rugby and general kid stuff but no problems with my hip.

If I place my hand on my left side I can feel it (a tendon or muscle?) jut out a small amount as it clicks. Also if I position my finger tips further into my hip but not anything to cause discomfort, the clicking totally stops (almost as if my fingers are preventing it from moving). I can jog fine but when I do I cannot tell if it is still doing it. I have also just increased my upper body training at the gym and will be including some lower body workouts too. I am going to the gym tonight to do some light reps of some leg weights to see if this helps but I will try not to over do it.

I waited a few months to see if it healed itself but it hasnt, doesnt feel any worse either.
I should probably also mention that I went to the doctors a few weeks back who sent me for an Xray to rule any bone problems out and they came back fine however he is on holiday now and the receptionist told me I do not need to see him again...(Isnt that my decision?). Whilst I saw the doctor he said to me I may have to see a phsyio if the xray comes back fine (hence why I am here).

So here I am seeking advice from you guys as regard to what sort of excercise I should undertake, any stretches etc that may help my hip get better. It really is getting annoying so I would hugely appreciate any help.

Matt.

Re: Hip clicking whenever I walk

Ok looks like I will try to sort my own problem out:

I have been going to the gym to do my legs once a week for two weeks now
and at first I felt some aches where my problem in my hip is. However I went to the gym last night (pushing myself about 70%) and I can say that the clicking feeling in my hip is not half as bad as it was last week. Although I can only just feel it, I am guessing that by using my muscles I am tightening the surrounding muscle tissue and maybe tightening the ligament/tendon that is causing me agony?
I will continue to do my legs at the gym once a week for two more weeks then I will try to up that to twice a week.
Whilst I do my weights I cannot feel my hip clicking so only tend to get the problem when I am walking. (possibly a posture problem?)

Re: Hip clicking whenever I walk

i think there is some proplem with ur ligament. u r doing the right thing that is gym for lower limb.if u do some resisted abduction and flexion at hip with low resistance and heavy repetation.
do these exercises in sets.

hope it will work
if u need further advice , feel free to ask.

gud luck

Re: Hip clicking whenever I walk

Sounds like snapping hip syndrome, probably caused by the TFL/ITB complex in your case (if you feel the snapping at the side of the hip). TFL becomes overactive (thus tightening the ITB which can snap over the greater trochanter of your hip) often as a result of glut weakness (and possibly poor core stability). Suggest you work on those and it should settle.
