    Brief Medical History Overview

Ankle reconstruction 8 months post op

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
I had ankle reconstruction surgery October 2009 and am still having some complications. The ankle is very stable and getting stronger. However I am yet to return to exercising due to pain that is stopping this and general ROM in flexion and extension.

    My questions are:
    1. I have a pain as per picture below (lateral ankle photo) that nothing seems to help alleviate it. Stretching or anything. Should I have heat/ice on it and is there anything I can do to help as this is the major concern.

    2. The next issue is the last few days when I stand I can put weight on the foot and walk due to pain in the front of the ankle and can't do inversion or eversion for a short period of time.

    Any help please.

Re: Ankle reconstruction 8 months post op

    Hi

The next issue is the last few days when I stand I can put weight on the foot and walk due to pain in the front of the ankle and can't do inversion or eversion for a short period of time.
I take it mean you can't put weight on the foot and that this is a typo? If so you need to get this checked out to be sure nothing really untoward is going on

the most common complication is that you are developing CRPS. (complex regional pain syndrome) This is particularly likely if you are getting swelling of the foot and discolouration. The pain in CRPS is intense and difficult to control. CRPS is very difficult for the patient and is best managed by a sympathetic physio who can support you gradually increasing your activities and movements that stress the ankle and foot. Have a look at some of the other threads that deal with CRPS

Thanks for the input and yes I have a typo but can't figure out how to edit it!!! I will do some more research with regards CRPS and talk to my physio about it and I see my surgeon this week as well!!! So maybe then in total I will have some more answers.

We recommend the Physio Shop - www.physioshop.co.uk
    Could likely be CRPS

"Physical therapy and cognitive-behavioral treatment for complex regional pain syndromes"
    https://www.cebp.nl/media/m1063.pdf

Just an article you may want to read. If you need any help with parts of it let me know! Just to clarify, you are doing exercises/stretches for your ankle already yea? Sometimes simple steps (i.e. proper rehab) can be missed completely. Could you give us an idea of the things you are currently doing? And maybe we can give further advice.

    Thanks, good luck!
