Re: Express your thoughts..

Just a quick reply:

More and more research is beginning to reveal the importance of exercise in many physiotherapy managed disease states. Where the focus previously has been on management and prevention of further deterioration, we may in the future be considering optimizing function, increasing function to a sustainable slowly deteriorating level.

Title: A systematic review of the effectiveness of strength-training programs for people with cerebral palsy

Physiotherapists are ideally set up to provide 'physical therapy' to groups of individuals who would not normally be classified as normal functionally or neurologically.

Re: Express your thoughts..

yes jonathan,

it can be very helpfull
IF your ( patient and therapists) goals have been discussed-planned after a good assessment.
We all know you cannot change the disorder but you can exercise weakened muscles and change fitness levels.
Because of our specific expertise we do have a lot more to offer than normal coaches and fitness trainers.

Keep asking questions...

regards

esther

Re: Express your thoughts..

Jonathan

As a newly qualified physio I have had limited experience. However, I completed a placement working with children with CP and other conditions. I found that physio could help to increase the children's quality of life, reduce pain in high tone muscles, increase ROM, improve positioning, encourage communication and promote independence amongst other things.

I found this experience extremely fulfilling and I believe the children gained a lot from their physiotherapy sessions.

Re: Express your thoughts..

in my personal experience i have seen a range of functional improvement in children with cerebral palsy. and amazing results with early intervention. so, no doubts on whether it helps. even in case of a severely affected child, there is something that u can tap- help d child enjoy a toy, some music....help d child express thru play.... help improve d quality of life. d answer will depend on what measure of improvement one is looking for!
