Palpable gap in muscle?

Palpable gap in the tissue above the medial malleolus. No history of injury or trauma. Some pain noted in the ankle on weight bearing. Does this sound normal for the tissue to have a gap? Is it just lumps and bumps of fatty tissue that is normal? Can anyone help?
